Is there any software that can automatically match handwriting without the use of an expert? Or is a trained expert really the only way to determine handwriting?

Handwriting analysis is not an exact science. Its a skill that some experts have. Computers may be handy in helping the experts analyze samples, but that is not admissible evidence in criminal cases without the actual expert, the computer alone is not an expert.

Computers can point out similarities and differences in handwriting samples. A human expert is required to interpret those similarities and differences.

It's a highly trained skill that requires use of a computer program and human learned skills. It requires years of study in psychologically and behavior skills. Its not just about handwiting,

No, it requires skills and knowledge beyond something that of a fixed computer program. Computer programs can only do what it is set up to do, and nothing more.
