If you want an intelligent discussion about Harry with Christians who speak out against the books and movies, here's a link:

(The whole address doesn't seem to want to print out, so just in case the link isn't good, note that the last past of the address is group/nopotter.)

If, on the other hand, you feel like sounding off about how ignorant Christians are about Harry Potter, then right here's a good place:

Father K, do you often call on the Lord to send down curses on people?

Dear sweet Jesus....why do we still have to put up with this??

Lord...if you won't help...can you at least get Dumbledore to send a curse on them?

Thank you;

Amen.

I'm 50/50 on the whole thing....personally - I'm sure it's a great book....but I've been taught being raised in a protestant family that we are to stay away from witchcraft, magic, and sorcery. So on that - I'd have to say I'd stay away from it.
On the other hand - I've heard that the writer is a Christian and there isn't anything real "bad" in the books or the movie.

I'm just a little leary of letting my kids be exposed to it.....but at the same time in the grand scheme of things I don't think it's "that" big of a deal.....

Anyways.....yeah.....lol.....that's the thoughts running through my mind! haha!

witchcraft, indeed. That means not only that the Bible speaks against witchcraft, but also that there are educational implications to kids choosing Harry as their model. Sure, one may argue that Harry follows the old pattern of the good saviour hero and that witchcraft is a device taken from fairytales and a notion that every nation can understand - but a kid does not know that.

i know the bible says witchcraft and sorcery are evil. but fiction is just one way of exposing the wickedness that is involved.
I do not condemn the harry potter books, Nor do i condemn Dungeon and dragons. however, the worst part about D&D is the large waste of time it takes out of a person life, if you reject these things you have to reject TV for personal pleasure and even card games.

jesus was condemned by the pharisees and sandhedren because he was accused of being prince of devils, but all he did was heal and turn water to wine.
If God could show you how Protect against evil spells what would he show you?

I have no problem understanding why some Christians are opposed to the Potter books. Their holy book describes witchcraft and spell-casting as evil. Of course, the kind of magic described in the Potter series has nothing to do with Satan, and evil is never glorified; it's portrayed as the opposition. Magic is just part of what makes the narrative fun to read.

What I do find interesting is that Christians do not recognize examples of magic in their own tradition: e.g., transforming water into wine, walking on water, destroying city walls by walking around them with a magic chest, and resurrecting the dead. Whether Christians admit to it or not, these are all examples of magic.

It is an excuse to continue pushing their views on others. It is an excuse to have something to HATE about..

Forget the fact that harry potter defeats evil and is victorious in a different view of serving for the good!

I guess you can sum it up that most Christians have lost their ability to believe in possibilities... who knows.

Magic and witchcraft.

I feel there are those who don't like it.
I don't mind. It is a form of entertainment. You don't really believe that people can do those things do you?

A person is free to like or dislike something. I for one think it is light entertainment.
The first Harry was good but the subsequent editions seems to be reaching. The story line seems to be degrading.

It's so very odd that they've decided to pick on the Harry Potter books. I really can't see into those people's minds sometimes.

They are always protesting and being offended at something. Don't forget that "The Passion of Christ" movie by Mel Gibson was released to massive Christian, Jewish and PETA protests and attempts to have it banned.
I think protests are often arranged as publicity moves.

I think Father K is just kidding with you, note who he asks to curse you.

It talks about magic and glorifies its use as normal, natural, and fun. The bible is against magic. Thats why.

Personally, I think thats idiotic because if we go by that thinking, we can ban Cinderella, Snow White, and even the Shrek movies.

They just decided to choose one to pick on it like children picking on one of the other students in class.
