Actually, the Greek word translated "author" in the KJV and other versions is probably better translated by the word "captain" or "leader", as the picture here is of a commander leading his troups into battle at the head of the formation.
"Finisher" might be better rendered "Perfecter", as the One who has finished the course Himself and left us the perfect example. (Hebrews 12:2)
