I think that it's just a habit. I used to have that habit a few years ago, but I stopped. To get rid of it, just stop drinking things with ice in them. Or, when you're done with the drink, dump the ice in the sink, don't sit there chewing it. It's really bad for your teeth; they can become cracked. You should stop it now before something happens.

Before I read the rest of your question, I was going to suggest that you get checked for anemia. I have always heard that an anemic person has the desire to chew ice. Not always, but it can happen.

Craving ice is usually a sign of low iron. You can take iron supplements and see if that helps. If it's just a habit, its nothing to worry about. I chew Ice all the time, but I never crave it. It's just something i do when I'm done drinking whatever was in my cup.

Well they say that it's a reliving of our early days when we used to be teething and want to chew hard things to toughen up the gums. It's not a problem until you start to do it too often and it can begin to grind down the rear molars. There's nothing wrong with it as a 'pastime' however, although if you can, find a substitute such as gum or even frozen grapes.
