I've heard that car insurance is required in Wisconsin unless you can show financial responsibility. Is there some type of application for this? The reason I ask is insurance is such a scam as far as comprehensive is concerned. I would buy liability but was just wondering what everybody knew on this subject.

I gotta disagree - it is not required in the state of Wisconsin. Meaning, your vehicle is registered there and you are driving there. You take that vehicle to another state and you better be insured. That is why officers do not ask for proof when they stop you there. However....you hit me and are uninsured and i'm gonna sue your ***.

I am certain that car insurance is not required in Wisconsin. I work in the legislature, and one of the Senators is currently introducing legislation that has been introduced every session since the mid-1970s to make either auto insurance or a large surety bond (which means you set money aside to pay for damages in the result of an accident). As with any time you are responsible for causing damages, an at-fault driver is responsible for paying damages, but this process is meaningless if the offending driver has no means to pay.

Every state in the US has an insurance requirement. Some allow you to self insure in VERY specific situations. That usually means you submit proof that you have more CASH available that the amount of insurance you would otherwise be required to maintain.

Edit: After farther research, it appears WI is on of 4 states that does not require liability insurance. However, driving out side of the state without insurance would still be illegal.

Prophet is incorrect. You MUST insure motor vehicles that are registered for the use of transportation in every state. Your state may have some exceptions... ie. watercraft, ATV's, farm equipment, etc.
