The first poster is correct, but I just wanted to add to what was posted.
They generally cannot freeze an account that is used ONLY for the SS payments.
If a person places funds from any other source into the account, it would leave the account open for freezing.
Funds from any other source could be from anything, for example - christmas and/or birthday checks, money from yard sales, gambling winnings, a family members money, etc.
If you feel that there may be a chance of your account being frozen and the account had been used to place other funds into it - I would suggest closing that account and opening a new one that holds nothing but the funds from SS.
Then, make sure that the bank is aware of the fact the only funds that are in the account are from SS. I'm not saying to just let a teller know, speak to someone higher up. Request that they place a comment on your account that the account is exempt from any freezing or garnishment action.
If an account that holds SS funds is ever frozen, it can be reversed though it is a drawn out, pain in the butt process.

Yes and no. They cannot garanish your SS, but they can freeze your account where the money is direct deposited into.
