I have some iron skillets that I cook with. It looks like the finish is coming off. Flakes comes off when using the skillets.
How can I fix this?

I've only seen cast iron skillets sluff when they were rusting. That wouldn't be a good thing to ingest, how old is it ? Maybe it's time for a new one.

If it's just a regular cast iron skillet, you can sandpaper off the finish and re-season it by coating it with veg or canola oil and baking it for a few hours in the oven.

You couldn't hurt a cast iron skillet with a steamroller. It can always be fixed. They rock.

are you speaking of cast iron skillets?...they really do not have a 'finish'...if you mean cast iron, scrub it clean with a scratchy sponge or sos pad., dry completerly, slightly warm the pan on the stove them "season" it with some cooking oil and a piece of waxed paper...wipe off excess with a paper towel..this needs to be done periodically,,cast iron is a good source of iron in your diet ...hope this helped

You will need someone to sand it down and then build a really hot fire and stick your iron skillet in it for at least 30mins-1hour. this is called seasoning your pot. For better results you may need to put it in another fire. After this process wash and seal with oil....I find mineral oil works best because it does not get rancid.

From a Southern cook: Flakes are coming off because you burned something, it's food, not finish. Really hate to advise you to committ this crime against nature, but you have two choices; sandblast or God forgive you for scrubbing them with a commercial abrasive and hot water. Next, coat them, annoint them liberally with oil and bake several hours at 350 to "re-season." My mama would not speak to me until I could again bake johnny cake to her likin' and she did not even acknowlege the roses I sent to beg forgiveness.

if they are not cast you can not. If you have cast iron wash/scrub and hand dry and then heat on open flame. after they cool rub with cooking oil on a paper towel,do not leave excess, just coat.
