Are you under a lot of stress right now? Dwelling on difficult things that happened during the day as you're going to sleep? That could be a reason.

It is possible that you're under a lot of stress. You can't control your jaw in your sleep, unfortunatelly. If it is stress-related it might go away when the stress is relieved, or maybe not. Some people do it for the rest of their lives. You should prevent further damage to your teeth by wearing a night guard.

Just was going to say stress and then saw your additional comment. You can purchase a mouth guard which will help prevent dental damage and it may make you stop clenching too, The type I'm speaking of, goes over your teeth. I believe that you heat it in water and then Fit it over your teeth the first use. My husband is a clencher and grinder and has a lot of tooth and bone damage from this. You can purchase at most drug stores

Find a qualified dentist to can evaluate your situation. It may be as simple as a custom made appliance or you may need dental restorations to place your jaw in the proper position. Do not purchase one of those mouth guards from a sporting goods store that you boil to form to your teeth. They will not do anything to help. When patients come to my office with this problem, they receive a full examination which includes evaluating all the muscles in the jaw, a full set of x-rays, a full series of digital photos along with impressions so I have models of their teeth to study and formulate a treatment plan.

Stress is a common factor in teeth clenching and/or grinding. You may need to just de-stress with some exercise. If that does not work you may need a dental night guard to protect your teeth from wear.

Stress is a big trigger for this. You can try relaxation exercises and or breathing before bed. There are some types of mouth guards that you can wear to bed for problems like this and teeth grinding.

If you're taking medications or sleeping aids, it might be that. Stop taking them to see if there's a difference.
