First and foremost, "Mormon" is a more commonly known name given to a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which is a Christian denomination.
My honest opinion...It is a Christian sect in the sense that the faith is centered around Jesus Christ (hence the official name of the church), and LDS members believe that Christ is our Redeemer, our Savior, our Lord. It is through Christ that we can reach Heaven. Without getting too complex about it, that's what I believe a Christian is, and Mormons fit all of these characteristics.
This is why I, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, consider myself a Christian. When I am told that I am not a Christian, I feel offended, because my faith preaches its members to strive to be like Christ, and to keep the Commandments. To pray. To have faith. All of these religious values have been instilled in me by this Church.
So when someone tells me I am not a Christian, to be frank about it, I find it disrespectful and offensive...because following Christ is what I am about, and what I always want to be about. I don't think people have the right to judge, and to say what other people are/are not. I think I know what I am better than what anyone else knows.
The basic definition of a "cult" is "Religious group, and its body of adherents", so going by that definition....ANY Christian sect can be viewed as a "cult", but the problem is that the word itself has been misused by society as a means of scare tactics. It is meant to create the image of a devil-worshipping group, something evil/hateful, or something along those lines. I suggest you take a look at the 13 Articles of Faith for Latter-Day Saints (Mormons)........
We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.
Now, does that sound evil/hateful? :-)

Mormons are a type of Christian. We believe that Christ is our savior and redeemer, that he is the only means whereby we can obtain salvation, and that he is the son of God. However, we also believe that God continues to speak to man through prophets, even after Christ. I think many other Christian churches have a problem with that. But Peter was a prophet, and all the modern prophets do the same as he did: testify of Christ and just lead the church. So I don't see why so many have a problem with that. We believe God has spoken to many and continues to speak today, that he is not silent and that he doesn't limit his word to just the bible. We cherish and love the bible, but as one form of scripture and not as the only word of God.
Regarding if we are a cult. We certainly aren't any more than any other Christian church. So, depending on your definition of cult either all Christianity or none is. From what I've seen, that seems to be a word people use to try to scare others away from certain churches. There really isn't much base for it.
I hope I helped a bit to answer some of your questions. If you have any more, feel free to email me. Anyway, God bless!

A Mormon is a Christian. So is a Catholic. But yes, I'd call Mormonism a cult within Christianity. But then... Christianity itself fits the definition of cult too.

Mormons are Christians, as far as I know. How come you didn't ask about Baptists, they are the ones I'm not too sure about.
Baptists and Jehovah Witnesses. What are they.
I know the Baptists believe in spontaneous salvation, and several other creepy theories.

I knew a Mormon who converted to Catholicism. Her biggest hurdle during the RCIA class was she didn't get the "Trinity" (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit). Additionally, she was quite puzzled on why Catholic's didn't baptise the graves of non-christains. That's what I remember most from hanging with her in RCIA class.
She enjoyed the way South Park did the "All about Mormon" show (season 7 show 12) http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/South_Park#All_About_Mormons_.5B7.12.5D ... but she's got a twisted sense of humor like me.

Yes, christianity is a cult. Mormonism is an off-shoot of that cult. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Mormon for more about the mormon cult.
