I'm familiar with certain foods sustaining you longer, but with less calories - could someone elaborate on this?

When we eat, hunger stops. That depends on two mechanisms:
1) the stomach is stretched: it's what happens when we eat foods with insoluble fibers, and that's why dieters binge on fruits and vegetables. However, it doesn't last;
2) sugar gets into the bloodstream: it's what happens when we eat food with nutrients, especially carbs but proteins too. When these nutrients get into your blood an array of hormones are secreted, and that makes hunger stop. The "no hunger" sensation lasts a longer time if you eat food with low glycaemic index (see the link below).
3) blood chemicals: some chemicals that are absorbed with foods and/or drinks make you more or less hungry.

Basically if you want not to gain weight (or if you want to lose it) you have two options:
A) you stuff yourself with fruits and vegetables like most frantic (and unhealthy) dieters do, OR
B) you eat low glycaemic index foods

The former is easier but you will waste your muscles away (usually chosen by people with eating disorders), the latter is nutritionally correct but a lot harder to learn.

Choose smart ;)

not at all...under normal conditions when the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is completely empty the brain will send this signal out so that we feed. so all it really means is that the GIT is empty. there is no correlation between this event and the amount of calories that have been burned

i dont think it has alot to do with it...i think what matters is if the amount of food intake satisfies ur stomach...weather it has a bajilion or just one callorie in it and if that matters i gots no clue..hunger just says that u need more food...or ur thinking about food and ur just bored :)
