Pickup coil in distributor is going bad.

Did you hook up the oil pressure sending unit? How about putting a wet gauge on it to see if it really doesn 't have pressure? Was the oil pressure relief valve disturbed during the rebuild? Is the oil pump drive mechanism connected properly? Unless it has no bearings installed, it ought to be one of the above. Unless, for some reason, there's no oil in the crankcase. Good luck.

either a wire has a bad spot or the cap is cracked. best way to tell is to start it up at night with no lights around and look for arcs around the engine. this is one way to tell a wayward spark. but that what it sounds like.

Check the ignition coil, more than likely rusty and coming apart at the bottom. It is on the front of the motor on the right (passenger) side.
