See if you can find an affordable MTB like a Trek or a Fisher. Don't spend more than $400 on a used bike, because a new one isn't much more. The benefit to a used bike is if it was a bit more expensive when new, it's probably lighter. And there are people who spend a lot and then don't use the bike much. The downside is the used bikes can be a bit beaten on...
Definitely get one with at least 8 cogs on the rear, and get an aluminum frame with a rock shock in the front. You don't need full suspension (those bikes are much too heavy anyway)

IF you want to start riding on trails, best to find something used to start with. I'd recommend something with from suspension although it is not really necessary. Be sure that it fits you. Good brands include Trek, Giant, and Specialized.
