Gymnosperms have the following description==

Gymnosperms (Gymnospermae) are a group of

Spermatophyta ( Seed bearing plants) have their ovules on

an open sporophyll ,

the sporophylls usually arranged in cone-like structures.

The other major group of seed-bearing plants, the angiosperms, have ovules enclosed in a carpel, a sporophyll with fused margins.( that is ovules are enclosed in an ovary)

The term gymnosperm comes from the Greek word gumnospermos, meaning "naked seeds" and referring to the unenclosed condition of the seeds, as when they are produced they are found naked on the scales of a cone or similar structure.

This group is further divided in to divisions and not Phyla ( Phylum)

Divisions are ===

1 ) Cycadophyta - It includes all cycas / cycads that are found in warm temperate and tropical areas.

2 )Pinophyta - It includes all Conifers. Pinus or pine is good example mostly in temperate zones.

3 ) Gnetophyta - Gnetum, Ephedra, Welwitschia. It is a Small group located in areas similar to those of cycads.

4 ) Ginkgophyta - Represented only by Ginkgo( Ginkgo biloba.).

The most common and widely spread is Pinophyta ( It is also known as Coniferophyta.)
