Like triglycerides they are built on a backbone of glycerol. They have at least one fatty acid that is replaced with a compound containing phosphorous and often other elements, such as nitrogen.

Phospholipids have:

1. a phosphate "head" that turns toward water and is polar.
2. lipid "tails" that turn away from water and are nonpolar.
