The biggest problem is that they like it and once they eat it will want more and will more likely to help themselves to it which then could poison them .It is indeed the theobromine. That is what the dog can't take. It worse for them to eat dark chocolate than milk chocolate. A hunk of milk chocolate may do nothing to a good size dog but a piece of dark may kill your chihuahua.

It kinda dependa on how old your dog is and its weight. Baking chocolate or already sweetened? How much and what is your dogs general health. How long ago? If it is a large dog it may get a case of the runs. Baking choc si the dangerous one here and if it is a small breed it really depends on how much the dog ate. If your dog shows signs of loose stool give it some boiled(not fried or baked) chicken and some plain cooked white rice--that ought to firm things up and soothe the tummy--Good luck!!!!!!!!!

A very small amount isn't going to hurt your dog. I have a toy breed (10 pounds) that got into a bag of chocolate chip cookies. His vet said that it wasn't going to be a problem and to just watch for diarrhea and stomach upset. A large amount of chocolate can be toxic and cause death (or at least a lot of very expensive vet bills).

Helplessromatic2000 is absolutely correct!! Great Research & Explanation. Supported by: My friend had a 30 pound dog that ate a 100g chocolate bar. (Not on purpose!!) No vomiting, no illness at all. Even still ate her dinner and played fetch 2 hours later.

Dogs can indeed die through this.

The problem is the cocoa butter in chocolate.

Canine digestion doesn't deal with this as humans do.

I eat chocolate all the time but only small pieces and I'm still alive!

depending on how much they can eat its a possibility they could die. I believe it slows down the heart. Keep your dogs away from chocolate of any kind. If you want more information check with a pet store, or with your vet.

Your dog, if untreated, can quickly go into convulsions, have arrhythmia, stop breathing and go into a coma.

First your dog may start vomiting on its own. If not you can induce vomiting with a hydrogen peroxide solution of half peroxide and half water.

The animal will also experience severe diarrhea which can cause the animal to dehydrate quickly.
