I realize my question sounds a bit strage. The background is that my boyfriend lost his father when he was young so I never met him. We've been together for over a year now and I've met his mom and sisters and they are great. But I'd like to know more about the man that influenced him for 19 years. There's infromation that I've picked up through passing comments, like his favorite holiday was Halloween, but that isn't much. I'm just not sure how to bring up the topic. It's been 6 years, so it might not be as painful for him to talk about but, I don't know.

Ask him. He will probably be flattered/impressed that you care so much about his father. But if he says he doesn't want to talk about it, then leave it at that. Don't pester him. Maybe he's been aching to talk about his father to you and he just hasn't found the opportunity to bring it up. Either way, it doesn't hurt to ask.
