first, I gotta say how many people who know nothing about the subject just pitch in we learned many lessons in Vietnam one of the most important is that fighter jets like the F-4 do not do well for low level ground attacks. Unfortunately, at the time, there were only F-4 and A-4s and some A-12s. F-4s have far too limited range, nearly zero loiter time, therefore, were not of much use to the infantry for Close air support. and they are too fast. By the time they find the enemy on the ground, pull up and turn around to line up for a run, the enemy would have already launched a couple of SAMs before the F-4 could do another pass. ( they weren't too effective against the old mig-19 and 21s either--it didn't have a gun and the missiles back then weren't as good as now)) In consequence, the USAF developed the A-10 Warthog, commonly called the flying pig due to its ugliness. the A-10 is the first aircraft to be designed and built with Close Air support Mission in mind and nothing else. -Perfect speed for Air to ground attacks, (400pmh, dash 500mph) and it has a turn radius of less than 100 feet -great survivability (heavily armored, especially around the pilot) -awesome loadout capabilities. shoots anything in NATO inventory, it has 11 pylons on which to load armament and it has the most powerful gattling gun ever, right in its nose. THE perfect anti tank weapon. the A-10 was used in Operation Desert storm in 1991 and most recently in 2003. It provided close air support to troops and tank columns on the ground. It took out over 50 Iraqi tanks with AGM-65 mavericks and conducted precision laser guided bomb attacks against strategic targets such as command bunkers. the A-10 is not carrier capable The US navy developed the F-18s for all weather attack and CAS missions now. Before it was the A-6s and the A-7 doing the job. Soon it'll be the new f-35s.

No, no lessons learned. The USA is in another Quagmire.

However, it did introduce the theory of "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder" and a bunch of bad Viet-Nam war movies and TV shows.

USA didn't lose that war, the USA withdrew their forces. The Liberals are the ones calling it a "loss" because the liberals were limiting how much fire power the armed forces could use in the region "To keep it fair" (Typical Libtard thinking)

We didn't lose in vietnam. We won every major battle there. The war was lost in congress.

No, because there are still people like yourself who want to see your own country defeated because you hate bush for absolutely no reason other than you were told to and because it would be politically advantageous if you're a socialist.

Politicians still find it okay to politicize a war. People still find it okay to congress to run the war.

Well since youve got some expertise or specialty study in the history of warfare you should probably just tell me what we should've learned from this. I think the thing I've learned is that people want what they want when they want it and that they assume if they get whatever it is that they dont have or need that everything will be perfect.

A) We didn't lose, we quit (which is probably worse to be honest)

B) Some people have, some people haven't.

C) Iraq is a far different conflict than Vietnam. It's more comparable to the Phillipines insurrection.

I think the hubris of the current administration overlooked any lessons from Vietnam. We lost there, and now we are losing in Iraq. Perhaps in another 30-40 years we will have the chance to lose again somewhere else when the lessons are forgotten again.

politicians suck at fighting or controlling any war.
All battles should be turned over to the Seals or other elite military groups with one directive .
Go win the war we started then give them what they ask for to win it. PERIOD.
They all would be home in about a week war over objective accomplished.
