I have been able to use Audacity to record both from CD's and from streaming media on the internet. It is all a matter of how you use the settings on the program.

I had begun to use Audacity to make recordings of my voice for French class. In that regard, I used the "Microphone" setting on the upper right hand side of the screen. However, if you are recording from an audio stream or from a CD, you might want to click on the drop-down menu that has "Microphone" on it and select "CD Audio." I use "Stereo Mix" on occasion to record French language radio shows to develop my ear for understanding of the language.

Audacity has the ability to record your sound card.
(choose stereo mix)
Now, just play whatever you want, from where ever you want, and use audacity to record and then export as an MP3.

You will have to play with the volume on your computer as not to max out the volume as you record.

(the waves should never touch the top- or if they do- just barely or it will distort the sound)

Just be careful not to activate other programs, as it will also record any other sounds on your computer.

(like hearing a little "blllllingggg" when you bring up a program or close one)
