because to invade japan it would cost millions of casualties on both the allied side and the japanese side. which one would you choose? losing 1 million people to end the war quicker or lose close to 30 million on a costly long invasion?

Yes, the USA dropped two Atomic bombs on Japan. Something many don't remember is that it was WAR! A declared war fought between two countries. The problem I have is let's say the USA didn't drop the bombs, we invade Japan, millions die. How is an invasion of the Japanese home islands better?

Winter - The war in Europe was over by the time the A-bomb was ready, otherwise we would certainly have dropped in on Germany.

We also did not blockade Japan pre-war.

To end the war in a timely fashion and to minimize the insane destruction an invasion would have caused.

There are infinite reasons you could come up with, the one I like is that this is a "Right Not To Be Bombed" planet. The United States reserves the right to attack a country for any arbitrary reason it sees fit, or no reason at all.

We wanted to end the war quickly with minimal US casualties. Without the bomb, we would have had to invade Japan. The civilian death toll would have exceeded a million.
