Not long, because you'd die of a heart attack.
Seriously, don't run if you're an overweight smoker! Try walking. Walking gives the benefits of running without ruining your joints. You shouldn't plan to run nonstop for more than a few feet until you've been training for about 6 months.
http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml is a really great program for learning to run, but please, please try walking first. Running when you're overweight is BAD FOR YOU. I hate when I see people forcing themselves to huff and puff along the jogging trails.
I recommend chewing gum (not nicotine gum, just gum) to curb smoking/snacking urges, and joining a gym if you can afford it (good way to spend those cigarette $$) to provide different and safe cardio options. 24 Hour Fitness clubs give free personal training to new gym users, but sometimes you have to ask (it's a policy, though). If you don't want to join a gym, just try walking for 30 minutes on most days.
Most of all, remember that these are two big changes and it takes 3-6 weeks for new habits to be formed. You will fall off this horse, but you just have to get right back on.
Good luck, and I commend you for committing to a lifestyle change.

make a commitment then go it slow start chewing gum or something to keep your mind busy then cut the very unheathy foods out of your diet like candy you can still eat it try for a surgary treat once a week then after you get use to that cut it down to once a month and so on then instead of trying to run just take a walk around the block once a day soon youll be able to breathe better so you can take it up to running but the number one thing is stay away from tv a half hour show a day is pelenty

the chemical depedency on nictoine wears off pretty quickly and most of the chemicals are gone from your body within a month, there is always the psychological addiction which is up to you to control.
as far as a work out regime, start small and slowly build you routine. do not do an overkill workout or you will get discpiraged easily.
best of luck, you can do it!

It all depends everyone is different. But talk to your doctor and tell him what you are doing, quiting smoking and wanting to lose weight. You may also want to start eating healthier foods and adding more fruits and veggies to your diet. But just take it slow and don't push yourself too much cause you don't want to strain a muscle. Good Luck!

Obviously you know your own answers. Why ask us. If you are really committed to becoming slim and trim and non smoking, get started of your own free will. Sympathy is not going to help you - only your own willpower.

So, smoking and eating too much...Knock it off...just don't smoke...If you need something in your mouth, keep the inhaler with you, chew gum, and eat ONLY when you are hungry...
