Hi, I have been a member for a very long and it was my understanding that food should not be served or be part of Primary expect Nursery. Today I found this article:
http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art7578.asp
It quotes the manual "Teaching No Greater Call" and I look through it but I cannot find where it says specifically that food in Primary detracts from the Spirit as suggested in this article.
I would like to know if anyone can give me a quote or policy from either a Primary Manual or the Church Handbooks where it says food should not be served or be part of Primary.
Thanks a lot.

I have been called as a Primary teacher (4-7) and the kids are always eating and drinking in class.

Do kids aged (4-11) in public schools get to eat snacks during lessons on English or Math or History or Geography? I know when I was at school (a very long time ago I'll admit) I wasn't even allowed to chew gum, or eat my own candies that I had in a bag in my pocket. It didn't hurt me at school to wait until break or lunch or home time, as I am sure that it wouldn't hurt children in your class to wait until the lesson is finished. Personally I do not allow my children to take snacks or candy to church as I feel that they can wait until afterwards.
Having a snack after the lesson is one thing, but eating during the lesson would be disruptive as well as inconsiderate and rude.
If you have any issues or concerns about policy then you should take them to your primary presidency.

I always serve cookies to my Primary kids. We had candies for Easter and Christmas and Hallowe'en. We have treats all the time! We find it helps the kids get through the meeting times because they get hungry. I have never heard anything like that and until my Stake President comes and tells us to the contrary, we are going to keep on in the same manner.
EDIT:
That was the most obnoxious article I have ever seen. This woman has obviously never had a 4 year old. To a 4 year old, the only thing in the world is "treats". When a kid walks out of a class saying "we got candies" it tells me that there is a teacher who thought enough about his/her class to give them a little gift and a snackie treat is wonderful because its cheap. I don't think it detracts from the Spirit. In my experience, a rumbling tummy creates a squirrley kid which detracts more. Unless your Stake Primary says not to, feed them.

Sorry I don't know any place where you can find your answer. I taught primary 7-8 year olds and I usually game them some kind of treat....I had no clue I wasn't supposed to give them food?
Even in the manual it says as a suggestions sometimes to bring a treat (I guess to eat when they get home?) oops.
I first heard about this, this year after teaching sunbeams. Also at a book club meeting some Mother's thought it was silly that they could not have snacks.

I used to teach the Sunbeams and I always gave them a snack at the end of the class. I don't recall anyone ever telling me not to.
Peace
To Kerilyn above: It's not a school. It's like a Sunday school class. It doesn't last but an hour or so, so the children are not going to starve...

I think that's up to each ward to decide. In some wards I went to, food and snacks were no problem. In my ward now they ask us (when I was teaching primary last year) to keep it to a minimum and to not use treats as a "bribe" for good behavior. I think it was mostly a request from the parents more than the church itself.

It might not be a church wide ting. I know our church discouages finger foods got littke little kids. IThere is nt suppoetd to be an ycooss ken./ Because food called torath. And there's always the chance of rice and mice. Since our chapel has had rats and mice, we tell all three wards that use our building to please not use food anymore and if you bring food, please clean it up!

Gotta sparkling some thing up for some people who are not very advised concerning to the LDS church: Being a instructor is a volunteer place. it truly is not a activity, and you do not gets a commission to do it. you are able to properly be requested via your interior sight church chief to do it, yet you do not might desire to settle for the placement, and you will flow away it any time. ok, with that out of ways, the coverage is possibly in place to maintain from getting crumbs or messes interior the carpet. maximum church homes don't have janitors anymore, so if it gets tangled up, it possibly would not get wiped sparkling. many times a volunteer team of lay contributors will collect as quickly as a month or so and flow via and vacuum, wash living house windows, airborne dirt and dust woodwork, sparkling the loos, and do away with scuffs on the wellness membership floor and partitions. it truly is approximately all that is going into the conserving of those homes. something greater desirable than that, the church contracts out. With people being so wellness-loopy right this moment, many families are switching over to organic organic and organic or maybe vegan diets. those diets are truly strict, and don't have a lot of treats in them apart from a tofu sundae that's a glob of tofu with some organic and organic almond slices sprinkled on actual (it truly is even greater desirable than ice cream! :D) and that i digress. i don't know in the adventure that your class is the 1st block or the final block of church, yet loading your babies with sugar is going to twine them and lead them to greater durable to take a seat down nonetheless via the different conferences and whilst they get living house, they're going to be bouncing off the partitions whilst their mothers and dads attempt to take their weekly nap. those are possibly the excuses why they don't choose for you giving the babies fit for human consumption treats, yet that would not provide up you from bringing toys or different treats. check out the occasion favors portion of your interior sight greenback keep or walmart. they are loaded with issues (some quieter than others) that your babies might truly choose for to play with, yet keep in mind, you do not choose for it to be some thing messy.
