I need to get from Richmond to Providence to pick up a car. But I don't want to ask anyone I know, obviously that's way too far. Maybe a train or bus? Anyone familiar with travel in this area?

Advertise your situation, and post it wherever you can. Believe it or not, sometimes people are looking for someone to deliver their car, right about where you might be going. It wont hurt to try. Maybe you'll get lucky Try your local car lots...they might even pay you to deliver a car to Providence...who knows? If these dont work, and time is of the essence, I would think that a Greyhound bus might be reasonable.

Stand on the Northbound side of I95 North.
Hold your right arm up, cup your fingers, pointing your right thumb in a Northerly direction as each approaching automobile comes into view.

This will not be cheap if you are picked up by a patrolman. Be aware and careful.

Seriously, take a bus.
