He was found stray so his nail is curling really bad. Also it has had a nail poke into it. We fixed that problem but I don't want it to happen again.

I had my dogs declaw removed because even though I trimmed it, it would still get caught on things and I was afraid the skin would tear. Bring your dog to your vet and have him examined to make sure he is healthy enough to go under anesthia. If he is then sure you can have it removed.
Good luck.

It can be done, but if I were looking at the same situation I personally would not. Usually, dewclaw removal is done when the puppy is very young, 2-5 days old. After this narrow window passes, it is actually a toe amputation and generally much more complicated.

The easiest and cheapest way to prevent this from happening again is for you to trim his nails. If you just take the tip off of the dewclaw once a week or once every two weeks then you don't have to worry about it curling into his paw pad again.

I would just keep the nail trimmed Some of my dogs have declaws and others don't it is not a big deal just an extra nail to clip

and as for anesthesia for things like dentals, it can be quite safe these days but you should have a bloodtest done just prior which will check for any health issues or blood clotting problems and if so the vets can adjust the anesthesia meds to accommodate health problems, leaving a dog with infected bad teeth is much more harmful to their health than the anesthesia and cleaning is , as the infection can damage the heart and other organs, I have a dog that is almost 10 that goes for yearly dentals because he has peridontal disease, quite often 10 year old broodmom greyhounds are turned over to adoption and they undergo spays with no problems, so anesthesia can be done safely even on older senior dogs. My moms former shih tzu had dentals upto 14 year old and she had heart and kidney problems at the time and came thru fine.

I can't think of why the dewclaw can't be removed, if your dog is in otherwise good health. And I imagine it would be better for him than having it curl up and poke him again, or getting hung on something.

It wouldn't cost much, I don't think. But this is something you'll want to check with your vet about.

If your dog is healthy enough for anesthesia you can have it surgically removed. If he needs his teeth cleaned your vet could probably do both at the same time and save you some money.

How expensive it will be depends on where you live and how expensive your vet is. It will probably cost between $200 to $400. Your vet should be able to give you an estimate.

I wouldn't have it done..When you get your dog nails clip they will also clip the dewclaws. He is 8 years old just let it be and keep the dewclaws clip. No big deal to have it clip. Don't put your dog through this if he doesn't need it.

You could, but it's surgery, and if you've already got the nail trimmed down there's no need for it. You just continue to trim it as you will have to do with all the other nails.

You'll have to call local vets for the actual price anyway, so you'll have to ask them if they think it advisable.

i'm a groomer. I desire everybody ought to have the dew claws bumped off at the same time as they get the canines neutered as a youthful pup. There aren't any pros to having dew claws. The cons are; at the same time as grooming they get interior a thanks to an different sensible common groom. at the same time as brushing, you will get them stuck contained in the comb or comb and cause them to bleed. If no longer careful the clippers can clip the mattress of the nail and rip it. The canines can get them stuck on in basic terms about some thing. they're oftentimes a difficulty to trim. i ought to assert about 30 % of the time they're deformed in a roundabout way. notwithstanding it really is considered an amputation to eliminate them. So the price will be truly severe. i does no longer suggestion to have them bumped off if you're no longer having any hassle. it really is painful for the canines. they're going to placed him less than anesthesia to have it performed. some thing to guage in a canines of his age. my perfect suggestion is to keep them trimmed as short as possible and that would help with the prospect of having snagged on some thing. Ask your vet how he feels about it.

I personally would not do it.... he is already 8 and that makes him a geriatric dog.... it will be a risk to put him under anesthesia for the operation.
Are you keeping his nails trimmed?

at that age i would reccomend talking to your vets i spoke to mine about my puppy and she said that she would only remove them if it causing a medcal problem and hurting the dog. the vet will advise if there are any other ways to sort this rather than surgery as this is the last thing that should be considered. it can cause depression in dogs (according to my vet) and there are the obvious problems associated with this
