I've been taking 20mg of Prilosec every day for the last 11 years with no side effects. It does NOT become less effective over time. If it seems to, the patient's conditioning is worsening. It is safe and effective. Beats the alternative of esophageal cancer

There might not be, but you'll want to be a little careful. My husband, like your wife and mom, took Prilosec every day for some months. Then the medication became less effective. And worse still, it started making him ill.

These days, we usually control his heartburn with frequent small meals, Papaya enzyme tablets, and ginger tea with honey and a bit of sugar. And a shotglass of red wine before major meals.

Please talk to your doctor . There are some conditions in which prilosec or nexium reduces inflammation in the esophagus in order to prevent cancer. Let your doctor know your concerns and maybe he can provide you with an alternative or something to prevent the bone loss. Best wishes.
