Yes. That isn't the only requirement that I'd stipulate, but it certainly is one of them.

The English language is the only way to communicate with one another in the US. It is our prominent language. But this doesn't mean you can't speak any other language. Some people have it wrong, we choose if we want to speak English or any other language at the moment.

For those who immigrate here they should learn the language. But not pass a ridiculous exam on English for citizenship.

Because in other countries English is another good alternative if you do not know the native language. In countries such as those in Asia there are so many different dialects but talk to most people in basic/simple english and they would understand what you are trying to say.

Also, majority of the working population in the US are english speaking. It shouldn't hurt immigrants to the US to at least learn the language.

It's important to learn it if you are moving to a country that predominately speaks the language. So yes, you should learn it if you are moving to the US. Why should the entire US learn a new language for a few people that won't learn English?

My great great grandparents made sure that they could communicate and that their kids spoke English perfectly, in an age that education wasn't as accessible as it is now.

Another story I'd like to share is my landladies son who lived in Hungary for 4 years. He barely learned a word of Hungarian. His mom would complain that the people who lived there didn't speak English. I said to her, well are you going to go out and learn Spanish because the guy down the block only speaks that. It kinda made her think about it and she never brought it up again.

Well, it is important so our people aren't excluded from management jobs because immigrants performing low paying jobs can't speak English, and to communicate with each other, since 200 languages are spoken in this country. Not learning English also perpetuates the non-English speaker into an underclass, often into the 3rd generation, according to studies, which creates social unrest.

well lets look at this logically. The primary language in the US is English. So I think it would be a good idea. The International language of Air Traffic Control is English. So is Medicine, so you would definitely benefit. America's patience is running out with those that will not assimilate, so in order to have a nice peaceful transition, I would learn it.

I thought it was already a requirement for those seeking citizenship. When did they change that rule. I don't know if anybody's noticed, but english is the most spoken language here, and it would be kind of hard to communicate or get around without speaking it.

Yes it should be a requirement. If you entered another country they expect you to speak their language why shouldn't we. If you want to continue in your native tongue at home fine but have your children learn it also it makes it easier for those who have a hard time learning other languages or those who are too lazy to learn another although I think people should learn at least one different language in this country to help those who struggle to learn English it may help them to assimilate

If you want to get a job, fit into American society and be treated like a real person, you want to learn English. If you do not want to learn the language of the country you wish to become a part of, then stay in your homeland and don't go there.

you can be an American citizen that doesn't speak English, you possibly could have been born here but speak whatever. However, a proficiency in English helps when you come here either being a low wage farmer or doctor. It is not important, it's vital.

I don't know about it being a requirement; but surely if you want to become someone in a foreign country, you will have to learn the language.
