The weight, sex and age of a person as well as other physical ailments and other medications being taken are all considerations that a Dr. should take before figuring out the prescribed about to give a particular person, therefore is it very important for the pharmacist to measure that dosage correctly.
Besides death, the side effects may vary depending on the dosage given for some drugs. For example Mercury was given to cure syphilis, this substance poison the body, however if the dosage was off it will kill.
Financially the pharmacy need to turn a profit too so measuring correctly will insure the correct amount/dosage is billed correctly, sort of like keeping inventory.

The basic reason that medications are given in measured doses is that if not enough drug is given it may not have any effect, and if too much drug is given it may be toxic. A lot of research is done before a drug is sold to determine what appropriate dosages are to be safe AND effective. This range is called the therapeutic window. However individuals may respond differently when given the drug, so knowing the dosage previously given allows adjustment up or down (increasing the dosage to increase effectiveness, or decreasing the dosage to reduce toxicity).
One of the problems with nutritional supplements is that the active ingredients may not be measured, or may even be completely unknown.

Every medication has certain required doses to achieve therapeutic effects, thus it needs to be measured accordingly not just to avoid overdose but not to have underdose as well. Overdose imposes danger. Underdose could also be unsafe. For example when you take an underdose antibiotics, there won't be any benefit but could possibly develop resistant strain of bacteria thus it imposes harm as well.

Because the medicine to be given is to be a therapeutic amount, and not a toxic amount or one that is too low and won't have a proper amount.
