It will NOT explode !! It may CRACK and then leak-ooze... I use 2 liter and 1 liter bottles to freeze WATER. Most plastic bottles will SWELL and then crack.

I just leave about an inch and a half of space to the top... and no problems.

A 12 oz CAN of coke can explode though... and what a mess to clean !!

I left an unopened 2 litre diet coke in my freezer for about 36hrs before I noticed it and took it out. Within a couple of hours of sitting in my sink, it exploded as loud as a gun shot. Various sized chunks of ice flew all over the room. Dishes, including knives were thrown from the sink.

So, yes, it can explode, but maybe not from freezing.

Yep--- not with a bang, but a whimper!
It will crack open and half-frozen sludge will ooze out and freeze solid.
Cans of fizzy drinks forgotten in the freezer, on the other hand, will awaken you in the middle of the night with gunshot-like pops that will half scare the life out of you-- and shoot all over the freezer and continue to spray the kitchen as you remove them. Lots of fun, those are!!

Ice expands, that means that the mass of the drink will get bigger when the liquid turns frozen. So, yes, it would most likely explode.
