In order to be saved you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and you accept him as your Lord and Savior. It does not mean that you know or understand everything about Jesus or God the Father. There are Christians out there today, who would be surprised to find out that Jesus is God. Will not knowing this disqualify you from heaven? I think not. When the day comes that we are face to face with Christ, I suppose all manners of information and love will become clear to us.

It is important because not to believe is a denial of the whole of salvation history and event, no one man no matter how good would be able to save humanity it had to be God made man to do this, after the fall of Adam and Eve all of humanity and all future generations were and are tainted by this first sin, so there could not be a sinless man unless it were God Himself Who comes down to us and takes on our poor humanity.
Jesus then is true God and also true Man.

If you are Christian then you are supposed to accept Jesus as the son of God. If you Muslim, you most likely can take a few things from his teachings. It is all up to you mate. There's no real importance, since some religions don't believe he's god. It all depends on your personnal beliefs.

Because God Himself requires faith in Christ (e.g. "Without faith it is impossible to please God..."). There are so many passages in the Bible that clearly necessitate faith, that it would be completely incorrect to claim that just following His example would suffice.
Then there's the issue of what is meant by following His example. Are we supposed to live a morally perfect life, so we can die a perfect substitutionary death, so that all people would have the opportunity to receive the free gift of grace? There are certain things about Christ that we simple cannot imitate because we're not God Himself.

You follow who's example? God's or Jesus'?
God killed nearly every living mammal on the planet. On top of that, he punished Adam and Eve for learning.
Jesus asked us to kill everyone that doesn't follow him!!! (Luke 19)
So if you follow their lead, you are a megolomaniacal murderous being that doesn't allow for education of our young.
