As far as I'm concerned, it is far more important to follow the example. Jesus didn't preach, and teach lessons to people so they could follow him blindly and then go do whatever they felt like doing after a hard day of worshipping. He wanted his example and his lessons to be followed. I am not a super-Christian, though. I have formed sort of my own belief system from the faith in which I was raised (Epicopal). I respect a person much more for doing good things and being kind, respectful, and "loving thy neighbor", than I respect a person who says "I love and worship Jesus above all and believe he is the true God," then hypocritically goes home and treats people like trash, lies, cheats, and steals, because he/she is already forgiven because his/her soul has been "saved". That's a coverall cop-out!

Satan believes in Jesus. That is not the key at all. The key is accepting Him as your personal Lord and Savior. When you do that, you will WANT to follow His example. Sure, there will still be temptations, but it is your job as a follower to resist. Not everyone is strong enough, but there are tools to help us with that, like prayer and accountability partners.
Also, you can follow His example all your life, but if you never actually invited Jesus to be your personal savior, then you might as well have been living your life the way you wanted, not His way.

FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLE!
It doesn't matter if you believe there is a God or not, of if you believe Jesus is God or not. People who have never even heard of God or Jesus can still get into heaven. All you need to do is live a good life. Look out for others, help anyone you can, don't steal/lie/kill, be a loving person.

This is not an either or proposition. Even the demons believe that Jesus is God. But they do not follow his example.

St. James covers that subject very nicely:
James 2:19-20 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Christ Himself said that His true disciples and friends are the ones who obey His commandments:
John 15:14-15 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
So the bottom line is that you must both believe and obey. They are both equally necessary for salvation.

Following Jesus without Him in your heart is worthless.
Having faith in Him and accepting Him as your Saviour far outweighs any of your other 2 choices.
