In virtual work method for beams where should the virtual force be applied?

is it at the point where deflection required or at the centroid of the beam?

At the point where the deflection is required.

The only centroids that are required in this method are determining the centroids of the moment diagrams, which are usually triangular. (if I remember correctly)
