People without a belief in God learn to navigate in and through society from what they learned early from their parents, friends, school, the laws of the land, etc. To navigate successfully they have to acknowledge some rules and the penalties, or break the rules or laws. Many of these non-believer's get by, somewhat successfully, even though they are not happy, restless, searching fitfully, finding no answers. Charles Darwin was such a person. His wife said. "Charles didn't know God, but God certainly knew Charles." Mrs. Darwin was deeply involved with her faith and God. The Psalmist said, "There is a way that seems right to man, but the ways therein are the ways of death." Charles Darwin looked over and studied most of God's creatures, plants, and geophysical land masses, but he could not see God in any of these things. Looking into his own kind he marvelled at what he guessed was evolution, but never acknowledged the Creator who built Charles himself. A brilliant but deeply troubling commentary on a life who absorbed so much knowledge, yet tenaciously acknowledged only his pride, learned so much, yet missed the most important message that creation points to---the Creator, Jesus Christ Himself. And Darwin started as a Divinity student. If you don't know Jesus, you have missed it all. Look up the letter to the Ephesians in the New Testament and marvel, Ephesians 2:8-10. God Bless. Bless others. Alexiam
The prophet Jeremiah, chapter 31:vs 10-14a, the passage contains the words
from God himself: "I know the plans that I have made for you, declares the Lord. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope. Then you will call to me. You will come and pray to me, and I will hear you. When you look for me, you will find me. When you wholeheartedly seek, me I will let you find me, declares the Lord." ( God is open to your approach, so ask already)

Why do some religious people think that you have to have religion to have morals? I know that you personally are not being serious, but a lot of people are when they ask this type of question.
I got my morals from my parents - who were not church-going people. I have seen religious people do some pretty shifty, sneaky, under-handed type things.
Just today, a preacher came to our house and wanted to see about buying a motorcycle from my husband. My husband and he were dickering on the final price. When my husband wouldn't lower any more, the preacher had the nerve to use guilt by saying "I sincerely hope the Spirit of the Lord works on your heart to lower your price." Like it was some type of Jedi Mind-Control. This is how we pay our bills and live. My husband could not go any lower. Besides he was practically giving it away as it were! Geeez! $450 for a motorbike ain't too bad!
Pardon the rant...but it really trips my trigger!

Morals do not come from organized religion. If they did we would certainly be in trouble what with the abuses perpetrated by priests, suicide bombers, leaders like James Baker and Jerry Falwell. Atheists get their morals from their families and from within themselves like everybody else. If you studied and were open to reality you would find that atheists are usually more highly educated and well read than various religious sects. I am not an atheist but every atheist that I have ever met in my over 60 years has been far more moral than many of the so religious people I have met. They are also far more tolerant of people with different opinions than their own.

They come from being a good and sensible person who does good for the sake of doing good. Not like those freaks who only do anything because they believe when they meet the product of their mental illness (God) they will be rewarded. They can't do anything selfless like atheist do, they always have to have an ulterior motive. Praise the Lord for the none believing, sensible, mentally stable people that are called atheist!

Right is right, with no attachment to religion. Read all of it in The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, but only if you're bright, educated and read well. It's on the NY Times best seller list, this week #8. Tight arguments, a bit too far left, but tight arguments.....

I'm a Christian and perhaps not qualified, but I have seen atheists that have very strong morals and stick to even when it hurts them.
Many get their morals from themselves and the teachings and others who cosider what is good for the common good and being true to themselves.
Some of those who stood up to Hitler, who was an atheist himself, were atheists and had enough guts to speak out against him, even though they knew that Hitler likely would and did punish and\or kill them.

They are human like every one else. They have common sense and the teaching that everyone received as to what is right or wrong. You dont need religion to have morals. All you need is to have heart and be a good person because you want to be. Not because "God" tells you to be.

Religion and morals do not go hand in hand. There are some religious people who are very immoral. For example, Ted Haggard preached blatant hate towards gay people, and then we find out he was banging Mike Jones. One does not have to be religious to have morals.
EDIT: Then again I could have just said "yo mamma".

I got mine from the back of a carton of soya milk.
So I pursue whatever helps maintain a healthy heart, builds strong bones and actively lowers cholesterol. (But I try to avoid going directly into hot water).
You'd be surprised how successfully they have steered me through life so far.
Live long and prosper.

There is no supernatural source for morality. An atheist draws his/her morality from the same sources as everyone else- the social context they live in and their response to it.
