I worked out a lot in my teens and early 20s. I have a good sized upper body and good calves. My thighs however could use some work. A friend told me at my age, I would not be able to do much with them. Any advice?

you can build muscle in the 70's.

fortunately having worked out in the teens and 20's you will still be able to reap the benefits of muscle memory. the diet is 70% of being big and muscular, going to the gym is the easy part.

focus on the diet and eating like an athlete. base your training routine on compound exercises and supplement that with isolation exercises that utilizes machines, cables and levers. and stretch after every training session, especially the legs. not stretching impedes the growth of so many people.

Your friend doesn't know anything! At least, not about building muscle. Since when is there an age when you can no longer build muscle? My dad has built muscle in his 60's!

I'm a 43 year old female, and I have had great success in the gym, so I'm sure you could too.

Squats and lunges are ideal for your thighs. You don't need any equipment, but if you do have access to dumbells or a barbells, they can be used to add more resistance.

If you belong to a gym, there are plenty of machines to help you out. Leg extensions (for the quads), leg curls (hamstrings) and the inner/outer thigh machines are great.

Since you want to build muscle, keep your weights high and your reps low. For instance, keep the weights high enough that you're really stressing by the 8th rep. Once you can do 10 reps with that weight, increase the weight, and go back down in your reps. Don't do more than 3 sets of one exercise. Expect to be sore.

My best advice is to get a personal trainer. I was in a slump and my trainer really helped me push out of it, he also made sure I was using proper form. Good luck!

You can do it Dude! I'm forty six and I've put on ten pounds of muscle from January. Keep the protein part of Your diet way up and stay off sugary stuff. Work the legs as well as the upper body and You'll see a noticeable difference in six weeks. Heck if Your a mesomorph body type You'll see them even sooner. Good luck.
