An oncologist can have PhD behind his name but should also have MD and possibly Professor of Medicine, Associate Professor of Medicine, etc. If you or someone you know is seeing an oncologist you must make sure he is MD.

A Ph, D is a doctorate, however, it is seperate from a MD. It is a seperate qualification and is usually awarded by disertation but can be awarded as recognistion for good work in a certain area. A vicar (think Dr Martin Luther King he had a Ph D), or nurse can also be a Ph. D. A social worker, you can even have a Ph D for work done in music or the arts. It is quite seperate from his MD qualification and his specialist study in Oncology

An doctor who is an oncologist doesn't have any special initials or suffix behind his/her name. He/she is simply a medical doctor (MD or DO) who has further subspecialty training in oncology after residency. They may have other initials, but that would just mean degrees in other areas (e.g. Ph.D., JD, M.S., etc.) or it may mean they are a member of certain medical societies (outside of the U.S.)

An oncologist is an MD. Same as neurologist, nephrologist, otolaryngologist, surgeon, they're all just specialties, within the M.D. career. Except opthalmologist, they are a D.O. incase you were wondering.
