As everyone else has said the answer would be no.
My cousin has been in a psychiatric unit 11 times. He is only 27 yrs. old. It is not this crazy weird place like some would imagine. Most are allowed to smoke, they have group meetings where they talk about whats going on in their lives, they see the doctor, watch TV in a big living room area, play games, meet friends there even, they do art projects and it's just like a big home away from home. If you are there on x-mas they let everyone help decorate the tree and make gifts and exchange them. You are allowed to have as many phone calls as you want from 7am until 11pm. It really isn't anything like the movie Gothica or something. It's pretty much decorated like a hospital but much nicer with flowers and pictures and rugs etc. And the nurses there are friendly and very nice. When my cousin was there they had either a pizza party, ice cream party or pop corn party with a movie every friday. It's a place where they try to make it as happy as possible to help those with depression etc. Most of them have alot of fish tanks around the unit also. Large fish tanks with tons of fish. I think they say the fish are calming for ppl. with anxiety. You can wear your own clothes etc. For very bad people they put them on suicidal watch, have them stay in their room on medications and keep a close eye on them until they are ready to join everyone else. From what I have heard about them and seen from visiting. Oh and yes you get visitors also. They aren't as bad as what you would think.

Hope this helped with this question and your other one regaurding what the inside looks like.

The psychiatric ward is one unit within a hospital. A stay there is anywhere from 1 day to 3 or 4 weeks. While an "Insane Asylum" is an entire hospital commited to mental health. They are now called Long Term Mental Health Facilities and a stay there is either perminant or for longer than 4 weeks.

Hon there are no insane asylums any more. They are called psychiatric facilities. All degrees of psychiatric problems are housed there, just in different areas of the building. The criminally insane are in locked cells or wards. They do not come in contact with the other residents. You do not have to be " insane" to need a psychiatric facility. It is not something to be ashamed of. Good luck for what ever reason you are asking this.

The terms are interchangable. Historically, Insane asylums came first, and were hopitals dedicated to the treatment of psychotic patients. Much of the treatment was barbaric, and the asylums did little more than keep crazies off the street. Then, psychiatric care was integrated into general health care, and psychiatric wards were created in general hospitals. The psych ward was generally locked, but treatments dis improve somewhat. Now, noone wants to pay for psychiatric care, so crazies are out on the street, in many cases, homeless. Our celebs seem to think that their spas are better called treatment centers today, and claim psychiatric issues, addictions, etc, as an excuse to go there. These units may be of some value. They get the celebs out of our hair for a week or two, until they are miraculously cured. Tooo bad it is so easy for them to get out...

A hospital psych ward provides short term treatment for acute issues. A psychiatric hospital provides inpatient treatment for those with multiple or unresolvable issues. There truly is no such thing as an asylum, that went out with the dark ages.

I think insane asylum is an archaic term for psychiatric ward.

A psych ward is a unit in a hospital and often people are treated there on a short term basis. An asylum is an entire institution devoted to people with mental health issues, and they are there on a more long term basis.

Ultimately, yes. But terms like "insane" and "asylum" are not cool these days. Psych ward is less rude to say, I suppose. Both terms describe a medical facility geared towards treating those with mental disorders. Asylums tended to house people but modern facilities (i.e. hospitals) tend to do both (housing some and treating others through out-patient clinics).
