Downs syndrome is not a disease, so treatments as such are not something that's viable. However, I did some research in the course of my job where I treat children with Downs Syndrome for illnesses that they might have. I discovered that there was evidence that supplements of vitamins A & E made a difference to their cognitive development. I used it potentised into homoeopathic form & now routinely give this with each treatment to these children & the difference in their response to treatment is amazing. The parents always comment how well they respond. Sometimes, it's just enough to give these vitamins in homoeopathic form to get an improvement in general health.

This is a chromosomal abnormality,of chromosome 21, occurring 1/800 births. If your planning a baby you should be refered to a Geneticist and have both you and your partner evaluated for any common risks like advanced maternal age ( over 35 ),family history etc. Most affected couples have 2 cell lines. There is a good chance that you can have a healthy child. There are no preventions because its chromosomal disorder, the mother would have several prenatal screenings tests done to check on the health of the fetus etc. Treatments would be after the baby is born, and treatment would be recommended depending on what sorts of problems the child has. Common for these babies to have heart defects, musculoskeletal problems, and many others, besides mental retardation, that can vary greatly from child to child. Take care. SW FNP

Downs is a chromosome abnormality, not a disease. Treatment consists of treating any physical and learning issued associated with this syndrome. There is no preventative short of not conceiving a baby. There are screenings available to detect Down's so the parents can either opt to terminate the pregnancy or opt to have what they need in place to care for such a child.

There are no cures for Down syndrome. There are standard treatment protocols to assist these patients in promoting maximal health and diminishing their disabilities.

Prenatal diagnosis can detect an affected infant while in the mother's womb. Some people opt for abortion. Others choose life.

Babies with Down syndrome often participate in early intervention programs within their first few months, and do benefit from their pediatricians being familiar with the medical and health checklist for children with Down syndrome. A respected pediatrician, Dr. Len Leshin, has a page on his website for students writing reports about Down syndrome, as well as information for families and medical professionals.

There are helpful national advocacy organizations that provide information and support for families of newborns and individuals with Down syndrome of all ages, the NDSS and NDSC.

Down syndrome is a condition that comes along with actual human beings, so asking if it can be prevented is like asking if female babies can be prevented, or male babies - and the answer is the same for all three questions.

Thank you for your interest in Down syndrome. You may have classmates, co-workers, neighbors or friends with Down syndrome who will benefit from your education, advocacy and friendship, as you would from theirs.
