The design is pretty decent, and the looks are not too shabby, but the sound quality is what is suffering in a value sense and in an absolute sense as well.
Visit some high-end stores online and locally and compare these to the best that Bose has to offer, and I believe you will see and hear the difference in spades.

I own a Bose 6.1 system and really enjoy the sound while watching my home theater. The expansive sound field really separates the sound front to back and left to right. The small speakers made it very easy to incorporate into the design of the theater and the subwoofer (three drivers worth!) really thumps the low end.
HOWEVER, the Bose system does not faithfully reproduce music very well. Too much bias to Bass and hardly any Treble. Midrange is mushy.
I have my audio centric equipment completely separate from the Bose Theater. Yamaha tuner and Tannoy tower speakers.
I did not want to compromise my music quality with the Bose theater system.
Guess the real question is "How are you going to use the system?" Theater, music, both???
Hope that helps.

In all home theatre systems the audio quality suffers because of all the extra circuitry in the receiver (5 or more channels of sound plus all the surround sound effects circuitry).
Most people who buy them are not very interested in the sound quality as long as they can hear the dialog and special effects. That is why they are relativley cheap to buy.
A well designed 2channel hi fidelity amplifier that can drive a suitable loudspeaker will give you sound quality that simply isn't available with Home Theater Receivers.
Any surround sound receiver under $500 cannot possibly have sound circuitry to match even an inexpensive 2 channel sound only amp.
A high quality 2 channel amp for music only starts at about$1000 .
To get the same or similar quality of sound in all of the surround sound receivers' channels would cost about $3000 to $5000 min.
The loudspeakers are another story. Their cost has to be kept down otherwise people won't buy them .That is why manufacturers have designed smaller speakers for home theatre. Most people (who are not audiophiles) are satisfied with them.Their sound is pleasant enough but not as good as some speakers made before home theatre came along.
So, in my opinion you get what you pay for.
Bose are a classic example of what i mean . Mass production of low quality speakers designed for home theatre. The sound is low fi screatchy and hollow (good for sound effects) . Millions are spent on advertising to get people in .It is a shame they have gone that way but i guess they wanted to boost their sales because there was too much compertition.
The bottom line is :buy what you like do't be influened by other people but realise the limitations that come with your purchase.

Skip the Bose!!! You can spend less and have a far better audio quality and better features. Bose are close ended systems that do allow you to add new components down the line IE Lifestyle System. True audiofiles dont even consider the brand, it is well marketed, that is why everyone thinks it offers such a incredible sound. They dont even bother checking out other systems that are far better!

there terrible they sound really bad for how much they cost. bose never list crucial information of there speakers that other speaker manufacturers have no problem giving such as frequency response that a big one. but i found a online study below where a frequeny test ws done on a popular bose system and it turned out to be far inferior to most home theater speakers heres a link.

Its really good. Don't be fooled by the small speakers. They pack a real punch. They have great sound quality with the optical port and they have nice video quality. Overall, the high end system is worth the cost but the lower end one's are not.

no i do not own one. why, cause bose IMO isnt what its cracked up to be. i think there mids and highs are not bad, but they almost dont have lows. i too was one to think Bose was the best. then i stepped out of best buy and listend to stuff at a private shop. i was blown away by a few differnt speaker brands. the one i went with was Klipsch. not the Klipsch they sell at best buy, but the Referance Series. great stuff. you should check it out.

i have a 3.2.1 for my TV and a companion 3 for my computer. they sound really good but it's not for classical music.and the companion 3 does have a harsh tone so if you listed to the violin tone or the flute, companion 3 isn't the right one. i wanted a companion 5 but i costs like 400$ and i don't think you have to spend that much money for a computer speakers.
if you have a lot of money, buy the 5.1 system. 3.2.1 if great but it does have a limit with the sound

Don't waste your money, there's a reason why the speaker grills don't come off . . . The components are Cheap, low quality. You might as well buy computer surround speakers, their the same quality and cost hundreds less.
