I am new to running an am currently running at 8.00 mile pace. How fast can i realistically expect to run a mile without training like a supreme athlete? Also, can anyone tell me realistic expectations for running five k as this is the distance that i would like to run on a regular basis.

It's hard to say what you can do since you are just starting out.

There are a lot of 50+ runners who can still run 6:00 miles
Check the race results here:http://www.cararuns.org/cara_info/standings06/gridm50.htm

However, whether or not you can do it, depends on a lot of factors. If you have just started running, your times are probably going to drop dramatically the first few months. When you start to plateau, that's when you can evaluate what its going to take to get you to 6:00.

It is possible to run sub 6 minute miles, but it probably won't be easy. I have been running all my life and just did a 15:08 2 mile, but there are a lot of people faster than I am. If you run 5Ks you should try to do sub 25. Pick some races and find someone close to your ability--you will find them near the finish line the same time you get there :-) Try to beat that person the next race you run together. If you work together you will both speed up, and may develop a great friendship.

Depending on your training you should be able to run faster than 8 minute miles, however, I don't think you are going to run sub 6, especially for a 5K. If you run a sub 7 min. 5K then you can run somewhere around 20:30. That is going to take some work, and I don't know what kind of training you want to do. If you want to enjoy running then run for the enjoyment. I think your biggest danger is doing too much too soon and becoming injured. Be careful not to increase your mileage too rapidly. Only increase your mileage about 25% every 4 to 6 weeks. You can do much more faster, but you can injure yourself because you did not allow time to strengthen your connective tissue and muscles. I am in my 60s and can run sub 7 for 5K but I have run my entire life and train daily. It is an addiction.

It really is possible for any 50 year old to break 6 minutes. My favorite mile speedwork is 300 meter repeats. Try to aim at doing them in 70-68 seconds each with a 100m jog. You probably could stand to lose some wait i suspect. Lose about 20 pounds. Increase your overall fitness and you'll be able to break 6 minutes with some effort.. but it will be worth it to not get smoked by 12 year old girls like my sister who go 5:59
