I was talking to a co-worker who has been sick for a few weeks. The past week he has been experiencing hearing loss and ringing in his ear. The doctor already gave him antibiotics but it does not seem to be improving. what is this as I've had colds and the flu before but never with hearing loss. He said that it doesn't feel like something is in his ear blocking it, it just feels very full in the inside ear and ringing all the time. Has anyone heard of this before?

He might be experiencing Meniere's. Menier's can have a sudden onset, and can start by a fullness in the ear, ringing in the ear, and hearing loss. Your coworker should go to an ENT. Another symptom (but not always experienced) is vertigo. If he experiences vertigo, he needs to get to an ENT right away. A severe Meniere's attack can result in permaneant hearing loss.

It can be the antibiotics. Some antibiotics such as aminoglycosides, vancomycin and tetracyclines can cause tinnitis and hearing loss. Other drugs such as quinines can cause transient hearing loss which will recover after a while. Get your co-worker to check with the physician about his antibiotics.
