My 3 year old Golden Retriever has been carrying his tail between his legs for the last three days and seems reluctant to sit. In every other way his behavior is normal. Any ideas what might be causing this ?

Otherwise his behavior is NORMAL. Of course I'm going to take him to the vet. Several people said he wants to mate and some said he has worms...Please tell me your experience with this. Why do you think this is the problem?

It sounds to me as if he has 'wet tail'. Has he been swimming lately?

Golden Retrievers are prone to this condition if they are not dried thoroughly after being bathed or swimming. It can be quite painful for the dog but it will get better within a few days.

Your Vet may be able to prescribe some painkillers in the meantime.

He could also be constipated. I think I would have him checked over by the Vet.

Here's a few ideas. Anal glads, they are small sacs on the anus the can become overfilled and uncomfortable. Many dogs scoot their bottoms to help relieve the pressure. Tape worms, which are often found in and on the rectum, irritate. It may be the hips, displaysia is common in large breed dogs. Of course, I don't need to tell you this but do take him to the vet as soon as you can. Everything I've mentioned can be uncomfortable and even quite painful. Good luck. I hope it isn't anything complicated.

I would definitely have him checked out for any reasons why he will not sit. He may also have impacted anal glands that have become infected and must be expressed by your vet. If infected these anal glands are very painful for the dog.

Get the guy into the vets and have them do a full exam and then you'll know for sure whats going on.

In all seriousness, maybe there's a problem with his hind quarters. the tail between the legs sounds like he's trying to keep anything from messing with his personal spot, and the reluctance to sit could be because it hurts for him to sit down, because something's got him agitated down there. I'd suggest a visit to the vet's.

Hmmm,
I'd take him to the vet tomorrow to get him looked at, perhaps hile he was playing, alking ETC. He strained some muscles in his hind area.

Has he been eliminating proeprly? Meaning, has he pooped in the past fiew days?
If not, maybe he has a hard stool, could e have eaten something he shouldn't have?
Take him t the vet on Monday just to be safe.

good luck

Maybe he has worms, or has injured the rear end where he goes potty and it hurts to sit. He could have his tail down to protect the area.

I think the most probable explanation is that his anal glands are impacted and need expressing, so I'm glad you're taking him to the vet.

In fact I'd bet money on it being his anal glands, so let us know!

Check out his rump. Something is hurting him. Has he had a BM recently? Was it "normal" for him? Take him to vet if you are unsure.
