I've been thinking about morality a lot recently, and I think that for the most part morality is what you decide it is. We can choose to create our own moral code or we can choose to follow the moral code of a religion or philosophy. It can be dangerous to follow an external moral philosophy because it does not usually fit us very well, and so we may have to suppress our disquiet at some of the things we have to do (or not do).
Most personal decisions about morality are based on "I don't want anyone doing that to me", although some people choose "I will do it to others before they can do it to me"

No, unlike the popular saying "listen to your heart," you should NOT listen to your heart. Our hearts are so emotional and clinge to unrealistic goals. Even the Bible warned us from it!
Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate. Who can know it?"
Also, the Bible is there for our counsel and for setting things straight, according to
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.
So, you can be "completely equipped" for everything if you look into the Bible.

My morals are based on my conscience. I don't need someone else to tell me what that says.

No, my morals were formed by my atheist father who never broke the Law and was never in jail. He taught us kids to be polite to our elders. People say he is a kind and fair man.
Being christian has nothing to do with morals.

love of self and others derived from what you discern....
