The liver is responsible for protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism; vitamin and mineral storage; digestion of food and detoxification of wastes. The liver is the main filtering and clearing system of the body. All blood supply travels through the liver to be detoxified.
Symptoms would vary depending on what the liver disorder or disease was...
Care with what you feed is very important, if you figure it's all going to go thru the liver. The more fatty, the more toxic, etc, the stuff you put thru the system, the more it is going to damage the liver.
You also have to know that is why Fresh clean water at all times is very important.
Usually when there is a problem with the liver, it's because there is a problem somewhere else in the body. Many reasons why there can be problems with the liver..
The answer is really to feed a good quality dog food, fresh clean water, and take care of the entire dog, making sure that everything is done in moderation, you don't give dogs the things that they shouldn't have.. grapes, chocolate, sugars, fatty meats etc.. If you take care of the entire dog, and keep him healthy and happy, unless he runs into a toxin, or has some hereditary problem, Your dog should live a good life and not have liver problems...

The function of a liver is the same in all mammals. I am not quite sure what you mean about "desises". I've not heard of such a word or symptom. As far as food, you should feed your dog a premium dog food, not grocery store. Be careful about the current epidemic caused by certain supposed "nutritional" dog food. Good Luck to you and your pup.

The liver has many functions, primarily digestion by the production of enzymes and bile, and filtering of the blood. That's about as much as I can remember from my studies - this link will tell you more!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liver
A good quality dog food will maintain the liver just fine. Liver disease is characterised by vomiting, and sometimes yellowing of the mucous membranes (jaundice) can be witnessed in the whites of the eyes.
Liver disease requires medical treatment from a vet, and they're the best to advise you what action to take if your dog has liver disease. It will probably involve a special diet, and supportive therapy including IV fluids and a selection of meds, if not surgery. Liver disease is serious, as we only have one liver and it is a vital organ - we can't live if it doesn't function.

Function is the same in dogs as in humans. It's been a month since the melamine showed up so if you dumped all the affected food when it was announced, you should be okay. If your dog is showing any medical problems, take it to the vet.

A dog's liver does essentially the same thing our liver does. Here is a link to a really good article that explains liver function and should answer your concerns.
