A.M stands for Ante Meridiem (Latin for before noon) P.M stands for Post Meridiem (after noon)

they're latin meaning "ante meridiem" and "post meridiem." "Meri-" means half/middle and "diem" means day (think carpe diem), with noon being that halfway point, or midday, considering each day starts at midnight. Ante means before, and post means after. So, it makes sense that ante meridiem means before noon, aka the morning hours, and post meridiem are the afternoon/evening hours.
