Someone says they are a federal agent. Approaches you and begins to give verbal commands.
Example video: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/380246/scare_tactics_eye_witness/
What would you do?
What would be the standard procedure to verify a federal agent's credentials / badge if he or she is not accompanied by a police officer in uniform arriving in a marked vehicle?
Is there a federal number to call?
What if someone who claims to be a federal agent pulls a firearm on you or begins to use physical force when you attempt to call and verify their credentials or don't co-operate. Would it be safe to assume that they for sure are not federal agents and defend yourself?
If credentials cannot be verified, do I have the right to call the local police and have them present before co-operating?

old Fuzz (answer): The only reason an officer, federal or not, pulls a weapon on you is to make an arrest. Resisting could get you shot.
Max (response): So what you are saying is that if the jokers in the video above had unholstered a firearm without continuing by saying "You are under arrest", you would have defended yourself with deadly force?
Or would you have hesitated?

Presenting credentials has always cracked me up.
Do you even know what an FBI credential or badge is supposed to look like? How about a U.S Marshal? ATF Agent? DEA Agent? How about your city police detective?
What's the point of demanding an ID if you don't know what you are looking at?
Verification is your best bet. A legitimate officer is not going to object to you calling his office. Look up the number in the phone book, do not accept the person's word that the phone number they are giving you is real.
The only reason an officer, federal or not, pulls a weapon on you is to make an arrest. Resisting could get you shot.
If the agent wants to question you and you can not verify his identity, then you can call the police tell them about the agent and they should send someone around or verify for you.
You also have the right not to say anything, even if he is an agent.

If someone is a legit federal agent they will willingly show you their credentials upfront and have no problems if you want to verify them. You have the ability to request to look at the credentials up close and have no reason to fear for your safety. If they do not follow these rules they are probably not legit federal agents. However, if you are in violation of laws they have the same abilities as the police in arresting you, so if you are considered a violent offender you may get approached with a weapon out.....I hope this helps, as I have been through a few Background Investigations I have had a lot of contact with Federal Agents, plus I work for the Federal Government so this is coming from experience.

Tell them that you will have to call the Medicare office and verify their credentials. If you're too busy to do so at that time, they'll have to either sit and wait or come back. Write down the badge name and any other pertinent information. Medicare and Medicaid are supposed to be doing unannounced visits, which only makes sense because when they were giving a month advance notice, agencies had plenty of time to "fix" records. Even so, I believe you do have to get official notification that they will be there. I would not, under any circumstances, show them any of the records. It could be a test, so remember the HIPAA laws.

I guess that you can ask for their plate number and check with their agency if they are or not in a mission. All cops have plate numbers.
This kind of situation is alway difficult since both parts are quite nervous and when asking this they might become less comprehensive toward you after you completed your check.
Calling local sherif or deputies you know can help, calling your attorney too. They will perform the necessary checks for you.

If they have pulled a gun on you, then it doesn't matter if they are legit or not.
