Lance you call a Shih Tzu a rat -dog..Be still my heart.. First of all I want to congrats you on spelling Shih Tzu right not many can do that...Try mixing her oatmeal with some dog food. You didn't say how old the dog is. In due time you can lessen the amount of oatmeal ,,The elderly lady might have use milk and sugar in the oatmeal and the dog was maybe eating the oatmeal to get to the milk and sugar.

I spoil my dogs they way they should be. I give them their dry food because it's excellent for their teeth. I also cut up Nature's Balance Doggy Sausage and put that in. Then I add French Vanilla yogurt with Active Cultures (they are good for digestion). Then I add peas, carrots, and green beans along with canned pumpkin (not pie mix, the straight canned pumpkin, lots of fiber). You can also add some boiled chicken. Their are a lot of really good dog foods out there. Make sure it had no corn and fillers and such. I get Nutro (yes I know it was hit my recall and has the tiniest amount of wheat in it but other then that it is great, plus it comes in small enough pieces for my Chinese Cresteds). Plus Mine eat very little dry since the rest of their diet is balanced but enough to help their teeth stay clean. As long as the main meat is chicken, duck, fish or lamb and the grain is rice your usually good, unless the dog has an allergy. I still get nervous personally of the fish ones because fish contains so much mercury anymore. Not that something couldn't freak me out about the other ingredients. Oh, and don't get the plain yogert, they get mad. And the fruit ones have to much sugar. Also watch the kinds of treats you buy. I make sure to get ones that are all meat and if there is anything besides meat it's spices. And oatmeal is a good snack or thing to add to the food as is rice. And If you have a local puppy bakery that makes their own baked goods your puppy will love you forever. The small shops (that don't sell Beniful or Grocery Store dog food) will have the best advice. I'd also look for a forum of just shih tzu owners for even better ideas of what people feed their dogs. I know the Chinese Crested Rescue I got my dog from has an exellent forum. Rescue Groups know the breed inside and out and should be able to really help you out!!! Good Luck.

You can start her off on it to get her to eat, but please wean her off it ASAP! Shih tzu's are fairly prone to being overweight, and oatmeal won't help.
Older people are quite prone - if I may say - to feeding their dogs inappropriate diets, especially little old ladies with their darling spoilt doggies! I have an overweight Shih tzu in my weight clinics, and guess what, she belongs to an old lady who is fattening her up on porridge and milk and all manner of unmentionable things 'because she likes it'!
So yes, feed her oatmeal if that's what she'll eat - but start introducing regular dog food with it. Gradually increase the amount of dog food and decrease the amount of oatmeal.
Feel free to email be for any further advice/support!

Since the former owner fed her oatmeal, give her some oatmeal. You can add new foods later but for the time being I would find out what KIND of oatmeal she fed the dog, instant or stove top? Plain or apples & cinnamon? Please get some of the kind the dog likes and is used to. When we first got out dog he would only eat ham. And you had to feed it to him by hand and now he's eating dry dog food out of a bowl. You can't expect that dog to adjust overnight, so get her some oatmeal and then over time give her less oatmeal and more of whatever you want her to eat.

Oatmeal is very nutritious for your Shih Tzu. It can be eaten alone or mixed with chicken, canned sliced carrots (or other healthy vegetables), and/or beef. Leaving her homewith the elderly lady is very traumatic for this little Shih Tzu, and she misses her home. It will take time for her to adjust so please be patient with her. Please try to put yourself in her place, and she will gradually adjust to your ways. How old is your new little Shih Tzu?

As long as you don't give her a steady diet of oatmeal. Maybe you can ween her away from the oatmeal when she gets use to the chicken soup. Someone gave me a Pekingese and he gave me a box of cheese cracker the dog loved for a treat. The dog ate the crackers but when they were gone I bought a box and he wouldn't eat them. They didn't have the smell of her old owners hand on them !!! lol
