I WAS the student photographer. It was one of my dad's friends 2nd weddings and they were quite older--both in their 60s. They had the grandkids in the wedding and asked me and my dad to photograph it for them.

They provided the cameras they didn't have autofocus and I had all these grand ideas. You know how you see pictures--the rings will be in focus but the foreground is blurry.

All the pictures turned out terrible. I took about 3 rolls of film and only a small handful were even decent at all. They had set up a camcorder in the back to capture it, instead of a videographer.

However it was in their advantage to have me there. One of the grandchildren was around 3 yrs old. He was running around like crazy during the whole ceremony. As he was running, he ran into one of the flags on the stage. It starts falling down--directly towards the preacher! I lunged forward and caught it just in time. Pushed it back up. In the video you can see the flag pole stopping about a foot from the preachers head!!

For my wedding I provided table cameras on all the tables. Asked the guests to take pictures of each couple at the table. I was thoroughly impressed with how many of those turned out great. So I wouldn't use a school student--even though its cheap. If you hate all the photos it will just be a waste of money.

My mother was a photography teacher for a while, so at her wedding, she asked several of her students to come and take pictures, she payed them each about $10 an hour because it was on a weekend, and about 4 students came for 4 hours each, which is only $160. I think this is a really great deal, and the pictures came out just fine. Just make sure that they are seniors or at least juniors in high school, and use digital cameras. You may want to pay them a little more than $10 an hour since you don't know them. You could make flyers and post them around some highschools in your area. Good Luck.

I don't have experience with this, but maybe speak with the professor of a photography class, or the head of a photography club at the college, and see if they can refer you to a student that they think is talented in that area. Maybe they will already have a portfolio made up.

I think it is a really good idea to save some money, but it's important enough to do some research on it. :)

NO. Do not do that! If the person is not a professional photographer then they will probably mess up or not think ahead. They may run out of film, forget to bring extra batteries, etc. NEVER EVER have a nonprofessional do your pictures or else you are taking a HUGE risk.

nope never but it doesn't matter even if i had one. the thing is, even if you get a professional and they are not good, it will turn out bad too. so the best is, try the person out like get him to take a few pic or maybe ask for his portfolio ;)
