That's awesome that you made the decision to lose weight. Just to give you some logical advice before you start on this endeavor however. It is not safe to lose more than 1-2 pounds p/week. I know, as well as everyone is on this planet, that when we really want something bad, and i do believe you want it, that you want it as soon as possible. Just remember, as you would probably want this weight off in a month or two, it took years of putting it on. Not that it will take years of taking it off. With that said, 3500 hundred calories = 1 lb. This is to gain it or lose it. So, to lose 1 lb. - 2 lb. of weight a week (7 days in a week, duh!), you need to reduce your calories of what your already consuming by 500 calories p/day. However, counting calories suck, most people don't know how to do it, so I'll just simply give you advice on a healthy lifestyle, specifically with what to do physically, and what to do nutritionally. Nutritionally, if you eat well enough, you can eat to being full, all the time! Specifically eating around every 3 hours, which would equate to 5-6 meals/snacks a day. If you do this, and eat right, not only will you not be hungry (because everyone knows deprivation of food sucks and only equates quitting the healthy lifestyle), but you'll look and feel great too! For breakfast, stick with foods such as eggs (only 100% bioavailable food on this planet), 100% whole _____ breads (oat, wheat, rye, etc), fruit, fruit, and more fruit!, oatmeal (try to make it yourself over instant if you can)- you can add frozen berries, honey(way better source of sugar than plain white/brown sugar) granola, Kashi anything (really healthy for you) orange juice with calcium + vit. C, if you love bacon-Turkey bacon, you can have coffee but try not to add sugar, if you must drink milk-if you drink 2%, go to 1%, if you drink 1%, go to skim etc. For snacks, handful of almonds, walnuts, cashews, peanuts, Smart Balance Peanut butter on celery, vegetables, vegetables, VEGETABLES, catch my drift! Everyone knows vegetables are bland, so do something to trick yourself. I cut up raw broccoli really small, put it on a salad, and with a light dressing you never know they are there, put sunflower seeds or craisins on your salad, you won't know they are there, skip the croutons and loads of cheese. *Tip-in a restaurant, ask for dressing on side and only put half of the container or less on. Oatmeal is a good snack, Kashi granola bars, Nature Valley granola bars, yogurt is a great snack, toast with Smart Balance Light butter, Light butter popcorn-don't eat the whole bag! Fruit is always a great snack. Anyway, other than that, your number one biggest key to losing weight is FIBER (apples, Kashi anything, MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF VEGETABLES) sweet potatos, red potatos. They are key because they not only fill you up, they control blood sugar, and don't let you crash, meaning you'll stay full longer. Overall for meals, fish (specifically tuna 2X p/wk, trout, mackeral, sardines, SALMON) any fatty fish at least 2X p/wk is extremely healthy for you, especially your heart. Lean chicken, turkey, take off the skin and don't eat anything fried, EVER! You can cook in oils, specifically olive, canola, sunflower, just make sure they are not hydrogenated! = cancer! Lean beef, for all of your meats, don't eat a size no larger than your fist, consume fiber with it, and keep your plate 2/3 full of colored food when eating meat=salad, carrots, broccoli, etc. Cakes, cookies, sweets, candies, doughnuts=GOTTA GO! Now I know no one can go without a little sweets, so incorporate healthy deserts, google search them, there are ways around a bad desert for you and a not so bad desert. Example, Angel Food Cake has no fat whatsoever, is going to have some sugar in it, but hey, everyone needs to indulge every once in a while. Get some strawberries, slice em up, don't add sugar! and your good to go! More than anything, I really do believe that Americans are struggling with their weight for two reasons 1) our consumption of liquid calories is outta control- try to cut out all soda, even diet, replace with water, water, and more WATER!, try green tea, or tea in general, moderately drink fruit juice, such as orange, cranberry, or pomegranate. 2) our portion size is outta control. Remember the eat meats only the size of your fist rule, don't go crazy on carbs, especially bad carbs. Don't be afraid of carbs though, all the foods I listed earlier are ok and will keep you full. All diets mainly suck, and no one needs to go on a low fat, no fat, low carb, no carb, certain soup, or whatever diet. I swear if I told people to eat standing on their head and they would lose weight they'd do it. Do your research, sorry this was long, it's a great starting point, moderately exercise. You don't need to join a gym, although this is ok too. Everyday you just need to do something, and then build up off of that. People think cardio sucks, but do you like to play basketball? Tennis, soccer, ultimate frisbee, golf? Who cares. If you have little kids, play with them, they never wear out. Walk, jog, skip if you want to. Garden, wash your car, doesn't matter, just do it, at least 30 minutes a day. Once you build up, increase the time and intensity. By the way, before starting any kind of program like this, consult your doc, tell em what ur doing. Some prescription meds don't go well with certain things (ex. Coumadin should not be taken with excessive amounts of Vit. K, found in brocolli, grean beans, and salad, amongst others) Motivate yourself everyday, visualize the healthier you, and surround yourself with positive people. They don't have to eat or do what your doing, but they at least need to be positive and help you on your quest. Good Luck! This is just a start, do more research if you need to based off of these principles i've listed here.
