A muffin is usually made from bread dough and not particularly sweet. It is more of a bread made in an individual serving. A cup cake is usually an actual cake that is sweet, often iced and in most cases has a paper around the bottom of it so it would come out of the pan easily when it was cooked. A cupcake in effect is an individual serving of cake.
