As others have pointed out... it's the Mess-hall / canteen.
In the US Navy, MESS duty was a pain... assigned out of your normal duties to spend time assisting the cooks (Mess-Specialists... NOW "Culinary-Specialists").
Junior enlisted did serving, dishes and other unsavory duties.
Senior Petty Officers got tapped (as did I) with a 90-day rotation as "Mess-Deck-Master-at-Arms"... supervising the mess-decks.
Perhaps though it the Soldiering sense... and the Brit sense it is "I'm headed to the CLUB for a @&$#ing BEER !!"
Hope he gets to Germany safely... I'll buy the 3rd pint

In the British Army the word MESS means the MESS-HALL or CANTEEN. However, the word MESS is also applicable to such as the OFFICER'S MESS or the SARGENT'S MESS. Lower ranks usually use the word MESS to mean the place where they eat.
