The B747-400 with a crusing speed of M=0.85, and a maximum speed of M=0.92 is just a few knots faster than others.
Mind you, no airline flies at the maximum speed (uses too much fuel), and there are a lot of airplane capable of cruising at M 0.85.
It is a bit like car race: the pack is pretty even.

The fastest ones still flying would probably be the 747, 777, a380 which all have close to the same cruising speed which is about mach .85 which they will rarely exceed. The Boeing 747 is capable of breaking the sound barrier but the only time that happened was during its certification tests, I also wouldn't doubt that the others are capable.

A couple years back while Boeing was developing the 787 or 7E7 its purpose was to build the fastest and most efficient airliner which cruised at mach .98 but Boeing has backed off that at is looking just for efficiency and now the plane will have a similar cruising speed.

Certainly not, the best aircraft is the trusty old Vickers Vimey, okay so it only does 95 mph with a tail wind but when was the last time one crashed eh...answer me that then. So it has an outside bog and the pilot sits in an open cockpit, so what, those damned pilots have it to easy these days. On the positive side dinner is served on porcelain plates with a silver service and they keep a damned decent cellar. Trouble with you Bob being Jockenese, you wont cough up the 25 guineas for a flight to Capetown, albeit it takes 2 weeks with stopovers but it is decent travel and you can get a decent game of bridge.

I really don't know. But it is really a shame that Concorde doesn't fly anymore. It was British Airway's flagship. Not only the fastest, it was a symbol too.
One of the safest airplanes in history. Unfortunately it was one unlucky accident that made the airliner to take Concorde out of business.
I am sure, that, if they would introduce Concorde again, it would be very successful.
A Concorde fan, and no, I am not British or French ;-)

This question is very debatable, since the speed depends on whether you're talking about "max cruise level" or "economy cruise level" speed. Or do you mean the "level flight NEVER EXCEED" speed?

As others have said, max speed for 747 is 0.92 mach (at least for later models). The older 727 is designed for max speed of 0.9 mach.

BEA Trident 1 claims to cruise at 610 mph, one of the fastest. However, rising fuel costs doomed it. At 27000 ft, that comes out to be roughly 0.889 mach

Looks like 747 wins. :)

The Yakanov 6000. These other poster don't know dirt about aircraft!
I don't know why I got 3 thumbs down. My answer is true. The aircraft I mentioned is a brand new russian prototype that just went into production. Yakanov is a new name formed by the russian military and private sector. Do some homework and you'll find that my answer is true!
