Depend on the religion you're in. Some say this, some say that, but does it matter if u wait 1 second or 1 million years 2 get 2 heaven (and sleeping thru the waiting part)?

The soul does not survive and travel to heaven. What will survive is your spirit. Upon bodily death, your soul follows, should I say, disintegration. Judgment happens( I don't know about the time frame, because in this dimension things happen in the blink of an eye) and you will be judged kindly and compassionately. Depending on whose perspective, we may say God or you pass the judgment of your soul's earthly deeds. Will you go to heaven or hell? I believe you just passed the hell(earth) after your bodily death. Judgment took place in the spiritual world. Then whatever the outcomes, either you stay in that dimension permanently or come back and redo your earthly life for another round to perfection.

At the death of the body, the soul separates from it and enters eternity. Since eternity is NOW, without past, present or future, just NOW, it therefore follows that a soul is present instantly at the last judgement. There is no "waiting" in eternity.

if the spirit goes to heaven [or hell] it is instantly as soon as it seperates from the flesh
if the person is to be tested it retains its astral shell [soul]
some are luke warm in belief or thier unbelief , these emerge onto the astral level and intime get oppertuinity to sin or do good unto others and are thus fallen into the depths or escorted [guided] into the light
much depends on our beliefs ,we either know god is real [love light reason grace]
or chose to full fill the lusts of the flesh [of those pleasures that demean spirit and flesh alike]
if we hold attractions [incarnate ] we remain bound to the astral plane till we can se the futility of the attraction and rise or fall depending of the goods or evils we seek to satisfy

I believe that the soul is the combination of the Spirit and the Physical Body...
I believe that you go through a judgment prior to the Final Judgment.. if you are saved, then your Spirit goes to Heaven to await the Final Judgment.. if you are not saved then your Spirit goes to Spirit Prison to await the Final Judgment...
I know that some will bring up that the dead know nothing.. etc.. but I also believe that Jesus opened the gates of Spirit Prison for His followers so things have changed from what the Old Testament says in regards to this matter...
But then again, I personally believe that many that end up in Hell will not spend eternity there.. but only 1000 years.. Jesus LOVES us unconditionally.. but we need to accept Him as our Savior.. those who reject Jesus as their savior after having known Him will spend eternity in Hell.. those who simply refuse to accept Jesus as their Savior will get the reward they have earned, not Hell, but not in the presence of Heavenly Father either.
Edit: I also believe that EVERYONE will be resurrected so we only need ONE body.. so there is no reincarnation.. but that is another question/answer *GriN*

Paul stated that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
I take this passage as referring to heaven.
Tired, just got off work and can't remeber where it was found, sorry.
goodnight and goodday.

From Jesus parable about the rich and poor man, they go somewhere ... not unconscious till the last days
but we also see times when dramatic changes happened after Jesus died ...
however it works, we need still need to take responsibility for our lives now

When Jesus is on the cross, remember that He turned to the thief and told the man: “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).
